goodDeeds • September 2019
It comes as no surprise to us that many of our county partners do more than just record Deeds — they perform goodDEEDS. By sharing as many of these good deeds as possible, we hope to raise awareness of the various charities and organizations they contribute to. We want to build their momentum and effectiveness in achieving their very important goals.
Fidlar Technologies is eager to recognize Lafayette County, Missouri, and the recent efforts they made towards recognizing their county’s first female sheriff, Minnie Mae Talbott. Committed to helping their county constituents, JoAnn Swartz, Lafayette County Recorder of Deeds, and her staff have found satisfaction in helping residents with genealogical projects. The Talbott family approached the Recorder of Deeds office seeking help, and a project, beneficial and educational for all involved, was undertaken.
June 19, 2019 marked 100 years since Minnie Mae Talbott had been sworn in as the first elected female sheriff of Lafayette County, Missouri. With a rich history to uncover, the Lafayette County Recorder of Deeds office set to work. As the staff and the Talbott family dug into the information available in the county records, the project blossomed and evolved, eventually including an impressive history of Sheriff Talbott, even including maps that geographically-located important parts of Sheriff Talbott’s life. Once the information had been gathered, JoAnn and her staff held an event where the staff displayed a presentation of the information, maps and all. The event was attended by Talbott family members, as well as members of families related to Talbott’s story, and members of the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office who continue to serve their community. After the event, Sheriff Kerrick Alumbaugh placed wreaths at graves in commemoration.
