INElkhart2It comes as no surprise to us that many of our county partners do more than just record Deeds — they perform goodDEEDS. We thought it would be a great idea to share as many of these stories as possible. By doing so we hope to raise awareness of the various charities and organizations they contribute to. We want to build their momentum and effectiveness in achieving their very important goals.

We would like to recognize Kaala McKee of the Elkhart County Recorder’s Office in Indiana for her charitable efforts. Kaala creates and donates artwork inspired by the major 1960’s art movement: Pop Art. For the past five years, Kaala has given her time and talent to an annual city event that occurs in Harbert, Michigan. The “Umbrellas of Harbert” event features a display of original, hand-painted nine foot market umbrellas designed by artists that are displayed along a major highway in Harbert throughout the summer. At the end of the season, each umbrella is auctioned off for charity.

INElkhartKaala typically receives her blank umbrella a month before the event starts; allowing for the time it will take to create and apply her original composition onto the umbrella. Acrylic paints are the only material she uses in her creative work process. Once completed, the umbrella returns to Harbert where it is displayed until the auction event which takes place in August. The popular summer event typically has live music, wine tasting and hors d’oeuvres. All proceeds of the umbrella auctions are given to local charities there in Harbert.
We would like to thank Kaala for her charitable contribution to her community.
